Ayesegawa Yumichika Biography (Bleach)

Yumichika is pretty much the most sexually ambiguous character in Bleach. *coughs* He is very, very pretty (and boy does he like to remind people of the fact). In fact, when he is first introduced at the beginning of the Soul Society arc, his main character point is that he is obsessed with the pursuit of beauty and his dislike of ugly things (which is normally played as a running gag, especially in his fight with Ganju).

Anyways, Yumichika is the 5th seat of the 11th division. He originally joined the Gotei 13 because he was tagging along with his old friend Madarame Ikkaku, who joined because he in his turn wanted to follow 11th division captain Zaraki Kenpachi. It should be noted that Yumichika is only the 5th seat because, as he says, 4 is a very unbeautiful number, and while he likes 3 best, since Ikkaku is already the 3rd seat Yumichika settled for 5th. (Well, at least he’s consistent. Beauty is more important than rank and prestige.)

It is revealed later in the series that his zanpaktou, which until that point had been referred to as “Fuji Kujaku”, is actually named “Ruri’iro Kujaku”. Both “fuji” and “ruri’iro” are color names in Japanese, the former being his zanpaktou’s least favorite color, and the latter being its favorite. Yumichika calls it by the nickname “Fuji Kujaku”, and when he does so it throws a temper tantrum and only does a half-assed release with mere pure attack features. (Yes, that’s right. His sword is just the same as he is, vain before all else.) Yumichika does this to hide the fact that his zanpaktou is actually a kido-based sword, which is considered cowardly in the 11th division. (He’s only using part of his power all the time, yet he’s still the fourth strongest in his division…Does this mean he’s actually a total badass? I knew there was a reason he was voiced by Fukuyama Jun…)
