Lunamaria Hawke is but one of the many pink-haired coordinator girls that fell under Athrun Zala's charms. She pilots a pink (debatably light red) ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner Zaku Warrior and later inherits Shinn Asuka's previous Mobile Suit Gundam, the ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam when Shinn got his upgraded ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam.
When Athrun got defeated by Shinn when Athrun was escaping from the ZAFT military, both Athrun and Lunamaria's younger sister, Meyrin Hawke, were believed to be traitors and dead. Lunamaria thus sought consolation in her loved ones' murderer's arms. Thus she and Shinn became a couple. (Shinn literally 'killed' his rival heehee).
