Background:
Rei Ayanami was the introvert first-child and pilot of Evangelion Unit 00. She first appeared in the series with her body swathed in white bandages and bleeding from being transported from emergency room to NERV’s facility. Her pitiful condition forced Shinji Ikari to pilot Evangelion Unit 01 without prior knowledge or training.
Rei presented a big mystery in the series, particularly the fact the she always managed to recover from all her injuries without a single scar. Also, she’s very withdrawn to her surrounding yet very much eager to please NERV commander, Gendo Ikari. Her devotion to him is the main reason why she risked herself in battles.
She looks like a porcelain doll but is actually well trained for combat. Her synchronization level with Unit 00 is not that outstanding but good enough to make her helpful in battle.
Shinji is very intrigued with her personality and her connection to her father. He tried to question her once but end up receiving a resounding slap after being carried away by his emotions. Rei also has unexplainable connection to the 17th Angel, which kinda resembles her.
Well, most of her mysteriousness was answered in the latter part of the story though doubts still lingered on her true origin. It might have been helpful if she can explain it to us, unfortunately, she’s in the dark as we are.
